Experience
I studied at the University of California in Berkeley, and especially enjoyed my classes in social theory and history. I obtained my bachelor's of arts degree in International Development, with a concentration on Latin America. I then spent a couple of years working for Teach for America, where I taught English in elementary school, in addition to running a program for refugee and immigrant students during after school hours. Much more than any education I received, this experience taught me how to teach well. The main thing I learned is how each student has their own best way of learning, and that it's my responsibility as a teacher to make sure each student has opportunities to learn subjects in ways that are meaningful to them. This drove me to begin devising creative techniques to work with students, which is especially effective in an individual tutoring situation. No matter what methods I use, I help my tutoring students discover a subject incrementally, so they experience many small successes, giving them the confidence that inevitably leads to mastery of the subject. I tutor a wide variety of subjects, but especially love reading and writing. I am also available to help students prepare for standardized exams such as the SAT, GRE, ISEE, and others.
