Sloan H.
Private tutor in La Mesa, CA
Education
I graduated from Dana Hills High School in 2010 with a final GPA of 4.33 and an SAT score of 2280 with subject test scores of: 790 on Literature, 800 on Math, and 760 on Biology. I received my B.S. from UCLA in 2014 majoring in Evolution, Behavior Ecology and minoring in Anthropology (GPA: 3.625). I just finished my Masters in Biology in Ulm, Germany with my thesis being on the evolution of chemical communication in Hymenoptera (GPA: 3.7). I am now doing my PhD in Math and Science Education at SDSU and UCSD and am doing research on how to more effectively train tutors to be more student-centered in their pedagogical approach.
Experience
While at UCLA, I began my own tutor business. I had 14 clients in the first year ranging from grade school to AP high school to university students. I was even the private tutor of Sylvester Stallone's three daughters. Through almost 15 years of tutoring experience, I have learned how to assess the learning processes of each student so that I can cater my teaching methods to their unique strengths. Whenever they are confused by the way the teacher or book presents a concept, I am there to explain it in easily understandable terms. I also teach them how to create time efficient and organized study plans. As a result, my student's confidence in their academic ability increases drastically, and their grades always follow. Parents chose me as their tutor because I can assist all their children with all of their classes. This makes their life easier because I am a "one stop shop" for all their tutoring needs. I can also give advice on college prep/application process and have helped seniors get into USC and Washington University. I have a resume available upon request with ample references. My priority is to make your student's lives as stress free as possible while succeeding in school. I understand students often have many extracurricular activities, so I always work with them around their schedule. I will try my hardest to make myself available even with short notice, and I will work late into the night or on the weekends until the student feels confident and relaxed about projects or upcoming tests. I also believe that I make a wonderful tutor because the students can relate to my age and station in life. They often look to me for advice with both academic and social issues because I have recently been through similar situations. Being such a role model allows me to love what I do!

Hobbies
My career goal is to become a Professor in Behavioral Ecology. As a behavioral ecologist, I am able to engage in biological research in the jungles around the world. I have been a research assistant on projects in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, California, and Hawaii working with species as diverse as rattle snakes, poison dart frogs, whip spiders, and birds. I have chosen this as my career path because I love to teach, travel, and learn about the natural world! To achieve this dream, I am currently doing my doctorate in Math and Science Education, so I can be a professor at a university who develops and teaches biology curricula. I obviously enjoy exploring and being outside, but I also have watched my fair share of Netflix as well. My extracurriculars in high school were soccer, water polo, gymnastics, orchestra, and interning at my local hospital, so on top of AP classes, I understand what it is like to be a busy student.
